Recognising an addiction to gambling

All types of addiction can drastically change someone’s life. Whether one is a drug addict or addicted to alcohol, it consumes your life in all possible ways. Gambling is an addiction that is just as bad as well as dangerous. Not as life threatening as drug or alcohol addictions but it can be in situations where you get involved with the wrong people or in debt so deep that you become a wanted person. You can loose everything you own by this addiction and not only things of monetary value but you could end up loosing your family and friends.

Gambling is a huge addiction but how does one recognise the signs that a family member or friend is a compulsive gambler. The first indication of a gambler is detected by looking at their work patterns. If the person is always absent from work then one should be concerned. This of course is absenteeism on a regular basis and would be somewhere between three or more days a week.

The next sign of a gambling addiction is a loss of social interest. If the person you suspect of such an addiction often withdraws him or herself from family or friends then you should know that something’s up.

Another major sign is whether this person always borrows money either by you or by other people. This is a big indication of a gambling addiction. Also take note of periods where the person has loads of money all of a sudden but cannot explain where all the money comes from.

Addictions

There is a new hidden addiction that is frighteningly out of control and it has the power to carve a hole in your life before you know it. The addiction I refer to is an addiction to pain medication prescribed initially for actual physical pain. Addiction to pain medication is the fastest growing addiction in the world due to mismanagement of actual physical pain.

Physicians and most especially surgeons are not permitted to admit when they have failed to perform well and a patient ends up with chronic pain. The first line of defense for a patient with a mismanaged case is pain medication. Even non-narcotic pain medication like Tramadol (ultram) is an addictive medication. With the long term exposure to medications like these, the patient ends up addicted. Addiction to these medications are particularly complex because there is a physical element of pain coupled with a narcotic or non-narcotic form of pain management.

Medications such as Oxy—anything or Methadone are highly addictive and have recovery rate of less than ten percent. Many patients attempting to get off of these medication and withdrawal from their addiction go through what is known as Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome, which is a way of saying that the brain doesn’t fire the right hormones any longer and the digestive tract, the body’s self regulation of temperature, the ability to feel emotions is temporarily damaged. These addictions are often reinforced when the patient struggles because there is a physical pain element that occurs and it is simpler for physicians to place patients back on pain medication. With proper nutritional supplements and a dedication to breaking the addiction, these medications can be lived without and other less invasive forms of pain management can be instilled provided the patient is willing. Addiction, medically endorsed, is still addiction and requires intervention to prevent long term problems.

work addiction

There are many people, who are work addicts or workaholics. They work all the time and think that this is absolutely normal. However, they don’t understand that they undermine their health. These people are miserable creatures. Work for them is their only occupation and recreation. They are depressed on weekends because they are deprived of their favorite matters. There is nothing more in life of these people except their work. That is why on weekends they often feel bad, have headache and other health disturbances. They work hard and dream of promotion because there are no other values in their lives. These people are rarely happy in their family life. Their children and spouses are neglected. They are on the last place in the list of their priorities. Work addiction is a characteristic feature of a great number of people and this number is increasing exponentially day by day. This is caused by the fact that people consider money, career and success to be the most important in their lives. Other things are considered by the majority of people to be absolutely unimportant. Today people are not interested of spiritual aspects of life. Only material things are attractive to them. These are the main reasons for work addiction. People don’t think much about the sense of their life and thus they work too much in order not to have much free time, because the surplus of free time often makes people think of their life and its sense.
